Which one is correct?

1. He could hear loud noises that pierce his ears.

2. He could hear loud noises that pierced his ears.

pierced, could means past.. so we shouold use past too for thw other verb Emotion: smile

loud noises always pierce one's ears. It is a universal truth. So it is always in the Simple Present Tense only.
