past tense

Hello,

1. The X that I ate was very soft.

What would the other way to write this sentence?

I am a little bit confused with the combination of "ATE WAS".

Could anybody explain it?

I ate X.
The X was very soft.
Which X? Which X was very soft?
The X that I ate. That was the X that was very soft.
The X (that I ate) was very soft.
The X that I ate || was very soft.

ate was is not a grouping. ate goes with one clause; was goes with another clause.
