If one of my friends died, and I express my feelings, which tense should be used?

If one of my friends died, and I express my feelings, which tense should be used?

This is a very vague post, but it deserves a sincere reply. If you are addressing a note to the family, you might say something like, "N has been such a good friend to me over the years; I am very sorry to hear....."

Accept deepest sympathies,
