What is there to describe? Your original sentence is acceptable English. It's up to those who say it isn't to justify their claim.

When you put those marks around text, the text will appear crossed out. You might consider choosing another way of marking text in the future.

The sentence is not wrong, but put a comma after "English".

Also, it sounds a little better if you reverse the order of the two clauses. (No comma in this case.)

She was already learning French when she started learning English.
