These strangers I met on my trip to Africa were really nice! They took me in and that is something I will remember for the rest of my life.

ARe both useable and interchangeable?

They are more or less interchangeable. Only the point of view is different (past vs present). The past point of view seems to me to be more appropriate in a book of your memoirs while the present point of view seems more appropriate in an ordinary conversation.

They are more or less interchangeable. Only the point of view is different (past vs present). The past point of view seems to me to be more appropriate in a book of your memoirs while the present point of view seems more appropriate in an ordinary conversation.
