Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Hey, Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Currently I'm doing an english book with excersises and I'm confused with the key to this book. There's a simple sentence:Oh no! I ____ (break nail).
And the key says that, there should be -> broke my nail.
In my opinion there should be used Present Perfect (have broken my nail) instead of Past Simple because we are referring to an action that happened a moment ago and has effect for the present.
If I am wrong, please explain me why am I.

For me, as a BrE speaker, "I've broken my nail" sounds more proper in this situation. However, some people might say "I broke my nail". My feeling is that the latter might be more common in AmE.

  • In any case, "I've broken my nail" cannot be marked wrong.
