Past Simple vs Past Progressive

Please help me choose the correct option. This is very difficult for me. Thanks!

1. Some strange things were happening while I entered/was entering the mall last week. Small children ran/were running from place to place andshouted/were shouting. I understood that a big show was about to begin. The children were excited and wanted to find a good place to watch the show.

2. We were talking about Dan when he suddenly walked into the room. He knew that we talked/were talking about him. He asked, "Did you talk/Were you talking" about me?"

3. When I came home yesterday, all the cats were sleeping. But at night, while I was sleeping, they played/were playing loudly and disturbed/were disturbingus all.

4. I got up early this morning. I sat/was sitting in the kitchen drank/was drinking while the others were still sleeping.

Thanks for the help! I now understand it better. Regarding #3, could it also be "played" and "disturbed", so that the "played"

Yes. That's another possibility.

I don't think "played" makes it unexpected.
