Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Which sentence is correct:
1.I searched for it for 10 years.
2.I was searching for it for 10 years.
In my opinion the right sentence is the sentence number 1 - there is no point at time needed when we use Past Continuous. Am I right?
Thanks in advance.

Both are correct. If you want to emphasize just how long it took, then the continuous makes perfect sense. Can you believe?
