Grammar

past simple v past particple

Hi Teachers,

I am reading a grammar book. This is the sentence.

(1) I felt very tired when I got home, so I went straight to bed.

Why dont we use had gone in this situation? Is it because of the atmosphere?

So if I rephrase this to "The house was very quiet when I got home, so I _____ straight to bed"

In this situation, do I still use went or had gone? So if it's still "went", when do we use had gone?

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Using had gone in either one of them wouldn't be correct IMHO. Look, first you get home right? THEN you go to bed.

  • Look, first you get home right?
  • THEN you go to bed.
  • You want to used the past particple as if you fist had come home and then went to bed.
  • If you want to use just different tenses you can write (1) I felt very tired and after I had got home, I went to bed.
