Past simple or present simple

I have been thinking about this question for a day and still have not figured it out yet.

1. You were always there when I looked back.

2. You were always there when I look back.

in the second sentence i think it is also correct, but when I asked my friend he told me that only the first sentence is correct.

In my opinion for example I am thinking about one of my friend right now who always supported me when I was studying in college. then I said you were always there when I look back. I use look in simple form because whenever I look back "Today, tomorrow, next month or whenever" it is still true, it's the fact. So, my question is "Can I use look in this event ?"

Thank you for your time and answers

Both are wrong because you have made the clause restrictive. Front it and use this: When I look back, you were always there for me.
