Past Simple or Present Simple?

Can you help me with another tense problem?

I'm not sure what tense I should use in this sentence:

"Kate used to live in a small town where people ........ one another."

Is it all right, if I use "know"? By this I understand that Kate doesn't live in this small town any more, but the people there still know one another.

Or maybe I should used "knew"?
"Kate used to live in a small town where people knew one another."

Thank you

I see. What if instead of "used to live" I used "had lived"? Would it change anything?

"Kate had lived in a small town where people know one another."
