Past simple or present perfect with " ever" ?

Hello,
I am not sure about the usage of the tense with "ever".
For example ,if we use the verb "live",should we say
- " have you ever lived in England ? "OR " did you ever live in England ?"
- Is it matter of Am/Br English?
Many thanks for all who can answer my question.
My best regards

  • My understanding is that Americans tend to use the simple past more frequently.

No; it is a concept, not grammar. The use of present perfect verb form suggests some kind of connection between past and present time.

everlastinghope "did you ever" is more specific ,isn't it ?
Yes, in a way.
