Grammar

Past Simple or present perfect

Hello,
I have been doing some English grammar recently and I have encountered a problem with a sentence.
This is the correct way of writing it:

It was only last month that the football playoffs finally ended, but the new season 'started' today.

But it sounds more natural to me to change 'started' to 'has started' because of the 'today' , but doing so would make the sentence incorrect.
Why?
Thank you in advance

Anonymous but doing so would make the sentence incorrect. I do not think so. I think present perfect is OK here.
