Is it possible to write these

Martha was looking so smart when she was going for an interview.
Martha looked so smart when she was going for an interview.
Martha was looking so smart when she went for an interview.
Martha looked so smart when she went for an interview.

Please could you let me know the differences between these.

I'd accept the last two as natural.

But I know the rule, I understand that "looking so smart" is a short action but "going for an interview "can be a long one, so why is it not possible to use past continuous?
