past simple or past perfect

Hi,
Which tense is correct ? Can I use both variants or not ?

1)Henry was late because he MISSED / HAD MISSED the bus.

2) I didn´t do the homework because I DIDN´ T WRITE / HADN´ T WRITTEN it in my diary.

Both are fine. The Simple Past is more common in such examples.. Clive
