Past Simple or Past Perfect

Shall I use Past Perfect or Past Simple in the sentences like that:

When I arrived at the party my frineds weren't there cause they left/had left 10 minutes earlier?

On the one hand there is a priority of events here (past Perfect): first they left and second we arrived. But isn't 10 minutes earlier considered as the reference to the exact time in the past? (Past Simple)

I agree with you reasoning. You can use simple past for a straightforward statement or past perfect if you wish to emphasize the early departure.
