Past simple or past continuous

Would it be correct to use past simple instead of past continuous in these sentences:

He was living in Russia when the Revolution started.

He was working in a bank when he met his wife.

And would it be a correct sentence if I used past continuous instead of past simple:

He lived in Germany when he was young.
