Past simple or past continuous

Hello!
Could you please help me?

I would like to know whether I should use the past simple or the past continuous tense when I describe the party i went to or my holidays:

My birthday party was very nice; we were dancing, playing games and singing.
My birthday party was very nice; we danced, played games and sang.

A few minutes later we were swimming in the sea and sunbathing. There was a swimming pool next to our hotel where we were playing with a ball in the water.

A few minutes later we swam in the sea and sunbathed. There was a swimming pool next to our hotel, where we played with a ball in the water.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Use simple past in your narrative. Past continuous is used of an ongoing action during which another action occurred: We were swimming when suddenly we saw a shark fin!
