Past Simple or Past Continuous

Hello! Is there a necessity to emphasize a process with the help of Continuous aspect while describing the situation as in the following example or I can simply use Past Simple?
I was walking along the street when suddenly I heard footsteps behind me. Someone was following/ followed me.
