Past Simple or Continuous

Hello! I am a bit confused with the following sentences, which I have to complete with the Past Simple or Continuous of the verbs in brackets.

1. My father ............... (not/feel) well yesterday, so he didn't go to work.
My initial guess was Past Continuous, in order to show that not feeling well was a temporary state.

2. People .............................. (think) that she was a great artist, but she wasn't.
I've learnt in Grammar that the verb think is a stative verb, and thus it doesn't have a continuous form, unless it has a different meaning from the basic one. So...my initial choice was Past Simple, but for some reason I am not sure.

Could you help me decide please?
