Past simple or continuous

Which sentence is correct:

a) the film started but we didn't listen.

b) the film started but we weren't listening.

I think b is better

If you had capitalized the first word of each sentence and had put a comma before but, they would both have been correct.

Yes, we can say that. They are correct.

In the first case the film started, but we didn't pay any attention to the film. Maybe we had other more important things to do.

In the second case we weren't being attentive, so we missed the fact that the film had started.
