Grammar

Past simple or continuous

If you were to use "when" what would the difference be if both were correct grammatically?

1 He recoiled when I came in to kiss him/I was coming in to kiss him.

If you were to use "as"?

2 He recoiled as I came in to kiss him/I was coming in to kiss him.

Thank you

Either of those would be correct in both 1 and 2. There is just the nuanced difference in time, with a more past feel to the past verb and more of an immediacy to the time period in question to the perfect tense.
