Is it necessary to use time expressions in Simple Past tense?
For example, I heard the strange noise. Is this sentence correct or wrong?

I heard the strange noise - correct
Also possible: I got up at 2:00 a.m. because I was hearing [ I had been hearing ] strange noises.
