Past simple and present perfect with the verb eat BE RP

Today i`ve met the examiner from the Cambridge Center in my country.

When i was talking with her he stated the the phrase:

" I ate 4 sandwitches for breakfast"

is by all means incorrect and has to be replaced by:

" I have eaten 4 sandwitches for breakfast"

Due to his explanation it comes from the verb by itself.

Can you point me why it is like that? Where can i find thoose differences in grammer between normal language and BE RP?
For me giving out the fact without any connotaions can be done in Past simple and even should be.

I should add that there was no context, it was only about translating that given one sentence.
