Past Simple and Present Perfect

I have a confusing question.

- My phone has broken down

- Really? How did that happen?

- I dropped it

- Have you shown dad ? Or Did you show?

I know that we should start by using Present Perfect and then we should switch to Past Simple. But what next?

Top answer

- My phone has broken . [we say "broken down" for machinery but not for phones]. - Really?

  • - My phone has broken .

  • - Really?
  • How did that happen?

- Have you shown Dad ? Or Did you show?

Both tenses are possible in the final sentence. There is not a big difference in this situation.
