Past Simple and Past Perfect?

Is this sentence correct:

I was happy because I passed my final exam,

or is it better to use the Past Perfect:

I was happy because I had passed my final exam.

Is this sentence correct:

I was happy because I passed my final exam,

or is it better to use the Past Perfect:

I was happy because I had passed my final exam.

Those are both perfectly fine. (I think I would use the second one, but the first one is also good.)
