Past simple and past perfect

Can you please tell me the difference between these two sentences !
1- I saw my cousin again last year. I thought he was tall.
2- I saw my cousin again last year. I had thought he was tall.

Anonymous1- I saw my cousin again last year. I thought he was tall.
When I saw him last year, he looked tall to me.
Anonymous2- I saw my cousin again last year. I had thought he was tall.
When I saw him last year, he didn't look as tall as I had predicted he would be.
