Past simple and continuos???

1. She was very extravagant. She always bought herself new clothes. 2. Her mother often told her that she spent too much money but she never listened . 3. I looked over the wall and saw mr. Pitt. He was planting cabbages and was too busy to speak to me?

Marinafed1. She was very extravagant. She always bought herself new clothes.
That's OK, but there could be a suggestion that she bought new as opposed to second-hand clothes. but 'She was always buying herself new clothes' would stress the frequency of her buying clothes.
