Past simple

Hello,

Can simple past be used in the last sentence?

He was drinking his coffee when he saw an old friend, Bob. He was very surprised that Bob was in London and found out that he was starting a new job in the city. (Would it be wrong to say 'started'?

Thanks

No, because the progressive "was starting" implies that Bob didn't start the job at the time of the utterance. "started/had started" are possible but they change the intended meaning.
