Past/ present

Looking back through history during the times of the Crusades and the
Inquisition, when violence has been committed in the name of Jesus, it has been
a result of disobeying Jesus’ central command to “love your enemies” ."
Could you please explain the use of perfect here? I would use past simple with historical events
