Past & present

hi

when we want to change the present sentence to the past(for example in the sentence below);

~i can't go swimming today~

we should change CAN and GO to COULD and WENT at the same time or no?like i couldn't went swimming last day.

I couldn't go swimming today/yesterday. You don't change the verb go as the sentence is negative so could places it in the past here. If it was a positive sentence.
