Past perfect/simple past

"The elder sister tried to reason with her, but the bitterness in young one’s heart had transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness: Nightmare Moon."

If the red past perfect is turned into simple past, does the meaning or implication of the sentence change? Thanks in advance!

The past perfect shows clearly that the transformation took place before the attempt to reason with her.
