Past Perfect with "before"

"Tears filled my eyes before I had eaten my breakfast in the mornings."

Teachers, please help me check if I understand this sentence's time sequence right:

I started eating my breakfast at some time in the past. And then before I finished eating it, tears filled my eyes.

I appreciate any help. Thanks so much in advance!
