Past perfect with a long time ago

A couple of minutes ago, I was looking through my things and found a present I had received a long time ago.

I think "I received" would work fine as well, but can the past perfect be used too? Since it happened before I looked through my things? Do I need to change a long time ago to "before" if I want to use it with the past perfect? Thanks

"...and found a present I'd received a long time ago.

'before' does not work in your sentence. How can you get a gift and it not to be 'before' NOW, the moment off speaking these words?

The quote should have included a thumbs down icon. It didn't show up on the posting.

No and yes. Use ' I'd '
