past perfect vs. past perfect progressive

for thousands of years, people have looked up at the night sky.

for thousands of years, people have been looking up at the night sky.

I want to know what is the difference in these sentences.

the former one means people are not looking up at the sky anymore?

The meaning is essentially the same. The second is more engaging, more designed to attract attention and curiosity. For example, I might begin a story with the second one. (Even so, there's nothing strange or wrong about starting with the first.)
