past perfect tense vs. past tense

In 1988 a Soviet icebreaking ship helped free three gray whales that had become trapped in the Arctic ice after they had swum into the coastal waters of Alaska to feed.

Is this grammatically correct?

I'm asking especially the tense of the after clause. Is it correct to use the past perfect tense (had swum) instead of the past (swam)?

If so, would it have been possible to use the past tense (swam) instead?
