Past Perfect Tense

'Please look at this small paragraph: 'Outside in the hall, he leaned against the wall, breathing deeply. It had been a long time since he’d lost control and made something explode.

Here past perfect tense has been used on the second line without any relation to another past activity. Is it correct?
