Past perfect tense

I know, we use past perfect to represent an event or action in the past before some other past event or action.

For example "I had finished my work, before I went to bed."

Is it correct to use present perfect as a stand alone? For example, "I had finished my work".

-Thanks.

May I know the difference between these two sentences.

1. I finished my work.

2. I had finished my work.

In the first sentence, though it is a simple past, definite time is not clear. Also, in the second one there is no other past event to get more clarity on when did he finish his work, Thanks.

The definite time may be understood.

- So what did you do when you got home?
- I finished my work [when I got home].

Or it could mean I have finished my work.
