Past perfect tense

I use past perfect when I, for example, describe one particular day in the past and want to say what happened before that day. So, do I need to start some other day in the past with using past simple? Thanks.

__________

Is past perfect necessary here? - I didn't have any money because I'd lost my wallet.

Hi, When the sequence of events is clear, Past Simple is usually used. eg I didn't have any money because I lost my wallet. Here, 'because ' makes the sequence of cause and effect clear.
