plz comment on the 'gross' overuse (misuse) of the past perfect tense instead to the simple, direct and meaningful past tense. prominent offenders include BBC and New York Times.

read any front page article in NYT -- lots of "had hads" and similar constructions. is not the simple past tense more elegant and meaningful than the complex (and misused) past perfect?
