past perfect tense

Hi,

In this sentence from one of his answering posts by Ant_222, Is a past perfect use a must after a phrase like "In the previous four years? Can we use a past tense. What other similar phrases can you think of that will make both tense uses possible? Is 'had had' here a past perfect tense?

"In 1988 I finally got me a 486 computer. In the previous four years I had had a Spectrum, 286 and 386."
