Past perfect tense

Hi, I know what a past participle is, but can someone please tell me what the past perfect tense is? Thanks

Top answer

Past perfect is 'had' + past participle. It is no longer so common a tense in English, and is dying a slow death. By the year 2500, it will likely have disappeared.

As Mr. M. described, the word "had" and a past participle combine to form the past perfect tense.
"had brought", "had taken", "had said", and so on.

The past perfect can be thought of as the past of the past.

When the police arrived, the suspects fled.

This says that the police arrived, and then the suspects fled.

0Anon, aren't you making a confusion with the present perfect progressive? Like in "I've been living in this village since I was born". The past perfect belongs to the past, not to the present.0-
