Past Perfect Simple

I'm doing an assignment on the Past Perfect Simple.

The target sentence is as follows, "When she arrived at the airport, they'd cancelled the flight". Any other examples must be in the context of going on holiday.

I need to provide the following,

Analysis
Anticipated problems and solutions: Meaning, Pronunciation & Form

My analysis of the target statement is: Subject + Verb (Past Simple) + had + Verb (Past Participle)

However am i correct in thinking the past perfect simple is just
Subject + had + Verb (Past Participle)

is my own analysis being confused between the two clauses....

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
