Past perfect progressive vs. past perfect

past perfect progressive vs. past perfect

After Stacy’s death, Henry burned their voluminous correspondence because he didn’t want anyone to find out that he and Stacy had been exchanging letters for years.

In the sentence above it seems that the underlined 'had been exchanging(past perfect progressive)' can be equivalent to 'had exchanged(past perfect)'.

Am I right?
(If I am not, can you tell me the difference between the two tenses?)

Regards.
