past perfect/ previous day

Hi
Please tell me if past perfect is essential here.

She said, " I won a prize yesterday."

She said that she had won a prize the previous day.

( I think about it because previous day denoted the sequence of the two events- saying and winning.)

In my opinion, it is. (I assume you're asking about the "indirect speech.")

The winning was done one day before the saying.

Thank you for your answer, Avangi.
AvangiThe winning was done one day before the saying.
I understand this, Avangi. Since 'previous day' denotes this idea, I have this question.

I wouldn't say it is 100% necessary, but it sounds better to me.

Hello,

I have read about reported speech and it says, the general rule is to move one tense back. However, there are cases when no change in verb form is necessary. 'No change' in verb form if the reported speech statement still holds true at the moment of speaking.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.

eg He said that the Earth is round.

But note that 'was' is not incorrect.
