Past perfect & present perfect

Is the sentence below grammatically correct and does it sound right?

I'd travelled by many a means of transport (tram, bus, plane, car) but it's the first time I've taken a ferry.

I have trouble with the mixed tenses here. Without some complicated prior context, it would be better to say "I've travelled. . . . but it's the first time I've taken. . . . "
