Past perfect/ past simple interchangeable

You're looking at an old photo where you look really confused.

You: I was in so much pain that night.

Friend: What do you mean?

You: I had/ had had way to much to drink.


I think it's obvious that I'm talking about what caused the pain I was in, so I'd use the past simple. Is the past perfect correct too? I think they're interchangeable here.

Yes, they are. both OK.

We don't commonly think that drinking too much causes a person pain. We think of drinking as sometimes causing problems later, eg by giving you a headache, or giving you a hangover the next day, or making you vomit later in the evening
