Past perfect, past simple

When I got home, I realized I'd forgotten to turn off the TV after I had finished watching a movie.

When I got home, I realized I forgot to turn off the TV after I finished watching a movie.

Is there a difference here? Are both sentences grammatically correct? Thanks
