Past perfect or Simple past?

It was such a difficult book that it was not until I (had) read it many times that I understood it.

If you were the writer, would you use “read” or “had read” in this case?

teacherJapan If you were the writer, would you use “read” or “had read” in this case? I would probably use just "read" in speaking or in writing an email to a friend. I would probably use "had read" in writing something more formal, as in an academic essay.
