Past perfect or simple

"I went to a party last night and saw Phil. I wonder how he knew I was going to be there. Had anyone told him/ Did anyone tell him I would be there?" Are both options correct? Which is better? Thanks

"Had anyone told him" means you are wondering if somebody had told him before the party you were going to be there . He knew before the party. "Did anyone tell him" means you are wondering if anyone told him you were going to be there, not necessarily before the party. There is a suggestion that you think Phil came to the party to see you, so "had anyone told him" is the best option in my opin
